Thomas Garrett was a Quaker and a known conductor of the Underground Railroad. In 1848 he and fellow Quaker John Hunn were brought to trial by two slaveowners on charges of harboring and aiding fugitive slaves. The defendants were found guilty by the U.S. Circuit Court in Delaware, presided over by Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, who ten years later would deliver the landmark Dred Scott Decision.
